Great Hermitage of Tatev

Great Hermitage of Tatev

The Great Hermitage of Tatev (its Armenian name is Tatevi Mets Anapat) is a quiet, hidden monastery deep inside the Vorotan gorge. It sits a little further down the river from the famous Tatev Monastery.

Monks built it in the 1660s as a place to step away from the world. They came here to live very simply, pray and study, with almost no contact with anyone outside. Surrounded by thick forest and tall cliffs, its stone church and old buildings still stand today in a calm, almost forgotten valley.

Getting here is not easy. The only way in is a tough hike — either down from Tatev Monastery or up from the Devil’s Bridge. But if you make the climb, you are rewarded with deep silence, untouched nature and a real feeling of the peaceful, faith-filled life that once thrived here. Many travellers reach this part of Syunik on the Wings of Tatev cable car, which holds the Guinness World Record as the longest reversible aerial tramway on Earth.
