Communist Cave is located in Lori Province, in the southern part of Stepanavan, within an area of the Dzoraget Gorge known as Mayor’s Gorge. The name “Communist Cave” is commonly used by local residents. In the official list of historical monuments, it is registered as a cave dwelling and dated to the 2nd–1st millennia BC.
It is a natural rock cavity offering a scenic view over the Dzoraget Gorge.
In 1899, Stepan Shahumyan established one of Armenia’s first Marxist groups in Jalaloghli, present-day Stepanavan. According to local historical tradition, members of the group held secret meetings in the caves of the gorge, away from the surveillance of the police and the authorities of the Russian Empire.
