Smbataberd Fortress

Smbataberd Fortress

High up in the mountains of Armenia, there is a place that feels like it belongs in a fairy tale. Smbataberd is a massive fortress built on top of a very steep ridge. It is surrounded by deep valleys on three sides, making it look like a crown sitting on the mountain. Because it is so high up, anyone standing there long ago could see enemies coming from miles away.

The walls of Smbataberd are incredibly strong. They were built hundreds of years ago using huge, heavy stones. Even though many centuries have passed, much of the fortress is still standing today. It was designed to protect the royal families and the people who lived in the nearby villages. Back then, it was almost impossible for an army to climb the cliffs and break through the thick stone gates.

There is a famous story about how the fortress was finally captured. The legend says that an attacking army couldn't get inside, so they came up with a sneaky plan. They knew the fortress got its water from a secret pipe hidden underground. To find it, they didn't give a horse any water for days. When they let the thirsty horse go, it used its nose to find the smell of water under the dirt. The soldiers dug there, cut the pipe, and the people inside had to come out because they were so thirsty.

If you visit Smbataberd today, you have to hike up a long, winding path. It’s a bit of a workout, but once you reach the top, the view is amazing. You can walk along the old walls and see the ruins of the rooms where soldiers used to sleep. It is a quiet, beautiful place that reminds us of the brave people who lived in the mountains a long time ago.
