Old Goris Cave Dwellings

Old Goris Cave Dwellings

  • Left bank of the Vararakn River canyon

On the eastern edge of the town of Goris rises a remarkable landscape of cone-shaped tuff formations, riddled with man-made caves carved into the soft volcanic stone. Some of these dwellings date back as early as the 5th century, and they remained in use as homes, stables, storerooms and even chapels until the mid-20th century, forming the original settlement of "Old Goris."

Today visitors can hike among the strange rock pinnacles and explore the caves, many with shelves and niches still visible, while enjoying views over the modern town below. The combination of unusual geology and centuries of human habitation makes the site fascinating and atmospheric.

Nearby, it is also well worth visiting the old cave village of Khndzoresk and the famous Tatev Monastery.
