Kosh Fortress (also known as "Aghjkaberd," the Maiden's Fortress) is located in the Aragatsotn Province, north of the village of Kosh, on the summit of a rocky hill. It is a medieval fortification complex, dated mainly to the 13th–14th centuries.
Structurally, Kosh Fortress has a rectangular plan. Semicircular towers are placed at the corners of the walls, which not only reinforced the defensive system but also made it possible to monitor the areas adjacent to the fortress. Tuff stones were used in the upper parts of the structure, and basalt in the lower parts.
One of the distinctive features of Kosh Fortress is its water-supply system. Two of the corner towers were hollow, and it is assumed that they also served as water reservoirs.
The best-known folk memory associated with Kosh Fortress is tied to the name "Aghjkaberd." According to local tradition, a beautiful girl lived in the fortress, whom Tamerlane (Lenk Temur) wished to possess. The soldiers he sent were defeated, but later, during a siege, the enemy managed to cut off the fortress's water supply. Not wishing to be taken captive, the girl threw herself from the fortress walls.
The village of Kosh is also home to the churches of St. Gevork and St. Grigor.
