Air Ballooning in Armenia

Updated at April 21, 2026

If you have already explored Armenia’s ancient churches by foot, the next step in your adventure is to see them from the sky.

Hot air ballooning is a peaceful way to see the country's beauty.

Where Can You Fly?

Most balloon flights happen near Yerevan, making it easy to do a trip in just one morning.

  1. Garni & the Symphony of Stones: This is the most famous spot. You will fly over the 2,000-year-old Garni Temple and look down into the deep gorge. On a clear day, Mount Ararat looks so close you feel like you can touch it.
  2. Aparan: If you want to see mountains and blue water, this area near the reservoir is beautiful. You will get a great view of Mount Aragats, the highest peak in Armenia.
  3. Yeghvard: This area has wide, open fields. It is the best place to watch the sunrise turn the grass from dark blue to bright gold.

How Much Does It Cost?

Ballooning is a "bucket list" activity. It is more expensive than other sports because it requires a large crew and a lot of fuel.

  1. Group Flight (shared basket): About 85,000 AMD (around $220 USD) per person.
  2. Private Flight (just for two): About 250,000 AMD (around $645 USD). This is very popular for marriage proposals!
  3. What is included: Most companies include a ride from your hotel in Yerevan, a 1-hour flight, snacks, and a Champagne toast after you land. You also get a flight certificate with your name on it.

The Experience: What to Expect

The adventure starts very early—usually around 5:30 AM. You need to be in the air just as the sun rises because that is when the wind is the calmest.

You will watch the crew fill the giant balloon with fire. Once you jump into the basket and take off, you won't feel any "dropping" sensation in your stomach. It is very steady and calm. You will float between 400 and 1,000 meters high. When you land, a "chase car" follows the balloon to pick you up and take you back to the city.

Pro-Tips for Your Flight

  1. Wear a Hat: The burner that heats the balloon is very hot and sits right above your head. A simple baseball cap will keep you comfortable.
  2. Don't Worry About the Cold: Many people think it will be freezing high up, but it is actually quite pleasant because you are moving with the wind, so there is no breeze hitting your face.
  3. Check the Weather: If it is too windy, the pilot will cancel the flight for your safety. Try to book your flight for the beginning of your vacation so you can reschedule if the weather is bad.
